Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from the sport, just a day after her heartbreaking disqualification from the Women’s Freestyle 50kg event at the Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat, who was disqualified due to being overweight by a mere 100 grams, shared her decision through a deeply emotional message dedicated to her mother.
In a poignant social media post on X, Phogat expressed her despair, writing, “Maa kushti jeet gai, main haar gai” (Mother, wrestling won; I lost). She further added, “Forgive me, your dream, my courage is all broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”
Disqualification That Ended an Olympic Dream
Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification came just before what could have been one of the most significant moments in her sporting career. With less than a day left for the final wrestling match at the Olympics, Phogat’s hopes were dashed when she was found to be 100 grams over the 50 kg weight limit. Despite her efforts to shed the extra weight, including a grueling training session, limiting water intake, and even cutting her hair, Phogat was unable to meet the required weight.
Her disqualification not only prevented her from competing in the final but also marked the end of her Olympic journey. Vinesh Phogat had previously made history as the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympic wrestling finals, making this setback even more devastating.
Appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
In the wake of her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). She has requested the CAS to award her the silver medal, a decision that is expected to be announced soon.
“Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification, asking for the silver medal. CAS will give its verdict tomorrow morning,” reported a source from ANI.
Had she competed, Phogat was set to face off against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal. Following Phogat’s disqualification, the Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez, whom Phogat had defeated in the semifinal, went on to compete against Hildebrandt. The American wrestler ultimately claimed the gold.
Vinesh Phogat’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious wrestling career that has inspired many in India and beyond. Despite the heartbreak of her Olympic disqualification, Phogat’s legacy as a pioneering female wrestler remains unshaken. As we await the CAS decision, Vinesh’s emotional farewell serves as a reminder of the relentless pursuit of excellence and the challenges athletes face at the highest levels of competition.
