A much-anticipated airshow in Chennai, celebrating the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force (IAF), took a tragic turn when five spectators lost their lives due to extreme heat and dehydration. The event, held along the sprawling Marina Beach, featured 72 aircraft in a spectacular display, showcasing the IAF’s aerial capabilities with jets like the Rafale, Sukhoi Su-30, and the indigenous Tejas fighter.
The airshow, attended by more than 1.5 million spectators, was expected to be a grand spectacle for aviation enthusiasts and the general public. However, the scorching heat proved too much for many, with temperatures peaking early in the day. People had gathered as early as 9 AM to secure good viewing spots, with the airshow beginning at 11 AM. As the event progressed, the lack of shade, coupled with long exposure to the sun, led to severe heat-related issues among the crowd.
Despite the presence of medical teams and volunteers to manage the large gathering, five people succumbed to exhaustion and dehydration. Of the victims, one person reportedly collapsed at the venue, while four others passed away after being taken to nearby hospitals for emergency care. More than 30 others were treated for symptoms of heatstroke and dehydration, with many requiring immediate hospitalization.
The airshow was meant to be a momentous occasion, marking the return of such an event in Chennai after a 21-year hiatus. The IAF’s aircraft performed various formations and high-speed maneuvers, including the impressive stunts of the Sarang helicopter display team and the Suryakiran aerobatic team. However, the extreme weather overshadowed the occasion, with some sections of the crowd struggling to handle the heat. Authorities on-site had set up water stations and made medical assistance available, but the sheer volume of attendees posed challenges.
Heavy traffic congestion around the Marina Beach area and nearby public transport facilities also worsened the situation. Long queues and overcrowded public transport routes made it difficult for many to leave the venue promptly, adding to the distress of those feeling unwell.
While the aerial performances were captivating, the tragic deaths of five individuals marred what was otherwise meant to be a celebration of the IAF’s achievements. The event organizers and local authorities are now facing questions about crowd management and emergency preparedness in such extreme weather conditions.
