Boosting Self-Reliance in Defence Manufacturing
The inauguration of the Tata-Airbus C-295 transport aircraft facility in Gujarat marks a significant leap for India’s defence manufacturing. This joint venture between Tata and Airbus aims to manufacture 40 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF), replacing the aging fleet of Avro aircraft. This project is not only a crucial step towards modernizing the IAF’s transport capabilities but also aligns with India’s broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, which seeks to promote self-reliance in defence.
Strengthening India’s Tactical Airlift Capabilities
The C-295 aircraft is known for its versatility, capable of performing a range of missions, including tactical air transport, medical evacuation, and paratrooping. With a payload capacity of 9 tonnes and the ability to operate on short and unprepared airstrips, the C-295 is ideally suited for diverse terrains, such as those found in India’s northeastern regions and border areas. By replacing the outdated Avro aircraft, the C-295 fleet will enhance the IAF’s operational efficiency and rapid response capabilities, ensuring better preparedness for military and humanitarian missions.
Catalyst for Indigenous Defence Ecosystem
The Tata-Airbus facility is set to boost India’s indigenous defence ecosystem. By producing aircraft domestically, the project aims to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, as well as foster technological advancements. The involvement of more than 125 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the supply chain will stimulate local industry, creating a ripple effect across the economy.
