Earlier in the day, the Union cabinet advised dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha, sources reported. The 17th Lok Sabha’s term will end on June 16.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerged victorious in the recent Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday. Despite the NDA securing a comfortable majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP, with 240 seats, fell short of the majority mark for the first time since 2014 and now relies significantly on its allies to form the government.
The opposition INDIA alliance, led by Congress, secured 99 seats in the election, up from 52 in 2019, cutting into the BJP’s vote share in states like Rajasthan and Haryana.
As India prepares for a new government, the political landscape has shifted, with the NDA needing to strengthen its alliances and the opposition gaining ground. Prime Minister Modi’s resignation marks the end of the 17th Lok Sabha, setting the stage for the next chapter in India’s democratic journey.
