“The project involves constructing a 4.1-kilometer-long twin-tube tunnel at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha Road.” The Shinkun La Tunnel is expected to facilitate efficient and rapid movement of armed forces and equipment while also promoting economic and social development in the Ladakh region.
Before the virtual event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. He laid a wreath at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh, on the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and members of the armed forces joined the Prime Minister in remembering the supreme sacrifice made by the soldiers.
Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrated every year on July 26, marks the success of Operation Vijay in 1999, during which Indian armed forces successfully reclaimed strategic positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir that had been infiltrated by Pakistani soldiers and terrorists.
The construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel is a significant milestone for India’s infrastructure and defence capabilities. At an altitude of 15,800 feet, it will be the highest tunnel in the world, reinforcing India’s strategic strength in the region. The project is also poised to bring substantial economic benefits to the remote Ladakh region by improving connectivity and promoting tourism.
As the construction of this engineering marvel progresses, it will pave the way for greater integration of Ladakh with the rest of India. Enhanced connectivity will lead to socio-economic growth, opening up new opportunities for the local population and businesses. The Shinkun La Tunnel will also ensure that the armed forces can move swiftly and efficiently, enhancing the security and operational readiness of the troops stationed in the region.
The initiation of the Shinkun La Tunnel project by Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks a monumental step forward for India’s infrastructure and strategic initiatives. The world’s highest tunnel will not only bolster national security but also drive economic progress in the Ladakh region.
