Mihir Shah, the accused in the infamous Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case and son of Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, was arrested on Tuesday—two days after he allegedly drove his luxury car into a two-wheeler, causing the death of a woman and injuring her husband. The 24-year-old had been evading the police since the accident on Sunday morning and was eventually apprehended in Virar, near Mumbai.
The incident took place on the morning of July 7 in the Worli area of south-central Mumbai. The BMW driven by Shah collided with a two-wheeler, tragically killing Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, who was riding pillion. Her husband, Pradeep Nakhwa, sustained injuries but survived the crash. According to the police, the impact was so severe that Kaveri was dragged for approximately 1.5 km before Shah stopped the car, switched seats with his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, and fled the scene in another vehicle.
In the immediate aftermath, Shah escaped the Kala Nagar area in an auto-rickshaw and headed to a friend’s house in suburban Goregaon. His friend then contacted Shah’s sister, who took both Shah and his friend to her residence in Borivali. Seeking to evade the authorities, the Shah family decided to move to a resort in Shahapur, Thane district, traveling in an Audi. Shah was accompanied by his mother, Meena, his sisters, Kinjal and Pooja, and two friends.
Mumbai Police tracked one of Shah’s friends through his mobile number, but the friend had turned off his phone to avoid detection. However, late on July 8, when the friend briefly turned on his phone for 15 minutes, the police swiftly located them via the mobile tower’s signal. This crucial mistake led to their interception and Shah’s subsequent arrest.
Before the incident, Shah had been partying with friends at a bar in Juhu. He left with his driver in the early hours, driving towards South Mumbai. Witnesses reported seeing him in the Marine Drive area around 4:30 a.m., with Bidawat in the passenger seat. As they approached Worli, Shah’s BMW struck the Nakhwa’s two-wheeler, resulting in the fatal accident.
The meticulous efforts of the Mumbai Police resulted in the arrest of Mihir Shah after two days of intensive investigation. This case highlights the importance of thorough police work and the consequences of reckless driving.
