Twin Earthquakes Strike Japan, Triggering Tsunami Warnings

Table Of Content

Japan has been shaken by two powerful earthquakes, with the tremors prompting tsunami warnings in multiple regions. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation to assess the potential damage and ensure public safety.

On Thursday, Japan was hit by two massive earthquakes measuring 6.9 and 7.1 in magnitude. The tremors shook the southwestern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, causing significant concern among residents and officials. Public broadcaster NHK reported that the quakes led to a tsunami warning being issued for several regions, as authorities closely monitor the unfolding situation.

Tsunami Warnings Issued

As a precautionary measure, a tsunami advisory has been issued for Miyazaki, Kochi, Oita, Kagoshima, and Ehime prefectures. According to a report by Reuters, which cited NHK, 20-centimetre-high waves had already been observed in the Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu. Additionally, news agency AFP, also citing NHK, reported that tsunamis of up to one metre were either expected or had already arrived in some coastal areas of Kyushu and Shikoku islands.

The Japan Meteorological Agency took to social media platform X to warn the public: “Tsunamis will strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted.” This advisory underscores the ongoing threat and the need for vigilance.

Immediate Impact

Shortly after the earthquakes, NHK reported that the initial waves had already reached the coast of Miyazaki, with more expected to follow. The quakes occurred less than 20 miles off the coast of Miyazaki, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey. The agency noted that the first quake, with a magnitude of 7.1, was followed by a second quake less than a minute later.

According to NERV, a Japanese earthquake monitoring agency, the tremors were recorded in the Hyuga-Nada Sea. NHK further reported that although no significant damage was observed at its Miyazaki offices, employees on the second floor struggled to maintain their balance during the quake. Similarly, the police chief of Nichinan in Kyushu confirmed that no buildings appeared to have collapsed in the area, which was a relief given the intensity of the tremors.

Nuclear Power Plants and Airport Status

In light of the earthquakes, concerns naturally arose regarding the safety of nuclear power plants in the affected regions. The Kyushu Electric Power Company reassured the public that its nuclear facilities were functioning normally, with no issues reported. Likewise, the Shikoku Electric Power Company confirmed that there were no problems at the Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture. NHK also noted that there was no change in the radiation levels monitored in the surrounding area.

However, the situation has disrupted air travel, with departures and arrivals from Miyazaki Airport currently suspended due to the impact of the earthquake. Airport officials are conducting thorough checks for any abnormalities to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

As Japan grapples with the aftermath of these powerful earthquakes, authorities are working diligently to ensure public safety and assess potential risks. The situation remains fluid, and residents in the affected areas are urged to stay alert and follow official advisories.
