A New Scam Targeting Students
A shocking incident unfolded at IIT Bombay as a student reportedly lost ₹7 lakh to a scam, dubbed the ‘Digital Arrest’ scam. This new form of cyber fraud has raised concerns about the vulnerability of tech-savvy youth in handling sophisticated cyberattacks.
How the Scam Works
The scam begins with a call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer. The scammer convinces the victim that their identity has been misused for illegal activities. Under the pretense of resolving the issue or avoiding arrest, the victim is asked to transfer money to ‘secure accounts.’
In this case, the student was manipulated into transferring ₹7 lakh, fearing legal repercussions. The scammers used psychological tactics and fake documents to gain the victim’s trust.
Growing Threat of Cybercrime
India has seen a surge in cybercrime cases, with scams targeting individuals across various demographics. According to NCRB data, cybercrime increased by 15% in the last year, with students being a growing target due to their tech dependency and lack of awareness.
Authorities Respond
The local police and cybercrime unit are investigating the incident and have urged citizens to be cautious of unsolicited calls. IIT Bombay has also issued advisories to students, emphasizing cybersecurity awareness.
Precautionary Measures
- Verify the Caller’s Identity: Always double-check claims of law enforcement by contacting official numbers.
- Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Never disclose sensitive details over the phone or email.
- Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the latest cyber threats and scams.
This incident underscores the need for stricter cybersecurity measures and awareness campaigns, especially in educational institutions.
