Chilling Temperatures Grip Odisha, Telangana, and Beyond
India is in the midst of a cold wave, with states like Odisha, Telangana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh experiencing sharp drops in temperature. On Monday, Odisha recorded bone-chilling lows, with Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj plunging to 1°C. Telangana wasn’t far behind, as cities like Hyderabad saw mercury levels dip to single digits, marking an unusually cold spell.
Odisha Freezes at 1°C
Odisha bore the brunt of the cold wave, with 15 locations recording temperatures below 10°C. Similipal National Park stood out as the coldest spot at a frosty 1°C, according to Monday’s readings. These harsh weather conditions have added to the challenges faced by locals and wildlife in the region.
Telangana’s Cold Wave Hits Hyderabad
In Telangana, multiple regions witnessed a significant drop in temperatures. Adilabad recorded the lowest at 5.2°C, followed by Patancheru near Hyderabad at 6.4°C. Rajendranagar, located within Hyderabad, reported 8.5°C, while Medak noted a minimum of 9°C, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). “Cold wave conditions are gripping Telangana, causing a rare chill in the region,” IMD’s daily weather report highlighted.
Punjab and Haryana Shiver
In northern India, Punjab and Haryana are also battling freezing temperatures. Faridkot and Hisar recorded a bone-numbing low of 0.6°C on Monday. Despite these biting conditions, Chandigarh, the shared capital of both states, clocked a relatively warmer 26.1°C during the day, three degrees above normal.
Ludhiana and Patiala also felt the icy grip, with minimum temperatures of 3.6°C and 5.3°C, respectively. In Bathinda and Gurdaspur, the mercury fell to 3.2°C and 3°C, while Gurugram in Haryana hit a low of 5.3°C, followed by Rohtak at 4.2°C.
Himachal Pradesh Records Minus Temperatures
Himachal Pradesh is witnessing some of the coldest weather in the country, with an orange warning issued for severe cold in the lower hills and plains, including Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur. Lahaul and Spiti’s Tabo was the coldest location in the state, plunging to a bone-chilling -10.6°C.
Meanwhile, Shimla continued to remain an anomaly, with a minimum temperature of 10.9°C, making it the warmest spot in the region for the second night in a row. This temperature was 5.2°C above normal. The local MeT office has issued a yellow warning for a cold wave in isolated areas of the lower hills until Thursday.

With conditions expected to remain dry across most regions in the coming days, the cold wave is likely to persist. While regions like Himachal brace for sub-zero conditions, other states such as Odisha and Telangana may see slight relief as temperatures gradually stabilize.
