Hyderabad to Be Exclusive Capital of Telangana: Key Updates You Need to Know
Starting Sunday, Hyderabad will no longer serve as the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This change, as mandated by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, will take effect on June 2. From this date forward, Hyderabad will solely be the capital of Telangana.
Legal Mandate from the AP Reorganisation Act
In 2014, when the unified Andhra Pradesh split, authorities designated Hyderabad to serve as the capital of both new states for a decade. The AP Reorganisation Act stated: “On and from the appointed day (June 2), Hyderabad in the existing State of Andhra Pradesh shall be the common capital of the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh for such period not exceeding ten years.” It further noted that after this period, Hyderabad would remain the capital of Telangana, and authorities would establish a new capital for Andhra Pradesh.
The creation of Telangana marked the culmination of a long-standing demand, officially recognized on June 2, 2014, following the approval of the AP Reorganisation Bill in Parliament earlier that year.
Preparation for Transition
In preparation for this transition, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recently directed officials to reclaim properties such as the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad, which had been allotted to Andhra Pradesh for the past decade.
Despite the separation, several issues between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana remain unresolved, particularly regarding the division of assets. These matters have been ongoing since Telangana’s inception on June 2, 2014.
Challenges and Delay in Addressing Bifurcation Issues
The Telangana government planned to address the bifurcation issues in a recent cabinet meeting. However, it reportedly postponed the meeting due to the Election Commission’s withholding of approval, citing the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.
To mark this significant transition, the Congress government has organized a day-long event on Sunday, while the main opposition, BRS, has planned a series of activities from June 1 to June 3. Additionally, the organizers have invited senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to attend the celebrations as the chief guest.
