Celebrating Victory: Team India Meets PM Modi After T20 World Cup Triumph
The Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, returned home from Barbados early Thursday morning after clinching the ICC T20 World Cup. Upon their arrival, the squad met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence.
The team was initially unable to return home directly after their victory due to a shutdown caused by Hurricane Beryl in Barbados. They were confined to their hotel until BCCI Secretary Jay Shah arranged for a special charter flight.
The Air India special charter flight AIC24WC – Air India Champions 24 World Cup – departed from Barbados at approximately 4:50 am local time on Wednesday and landed in Delhi at 6 am (IST) on Thursday after a 16-hour non-stop journey.
Heavy security was in place at Indira Gandhi International Airport to manage the crowd, but fans’ enthusiasm remained undeterred. They cheered energetically, holding up posters of star batter Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma, and outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid. Two buses were stationed outside the T3 Terminal to transport the players to ITC Maurya Sheraton, where they were welcomed with traditional dhol and Bhangra dancers.
Many players, including skipper Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant, joined the dancers, creating a memorable experience for
present. The on-duty security personnel were seen smiling as the players, after their long journey, interacted with the fans and moved into their rooms following a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony.
This victory marked India’s second T20 World Cup title, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy. India’s previous ICC title was in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Their earlier World Cup titles came in 1983 (ODI), 2007 (T20), and 2011 (ODI).
Following their meeting with the Prime Minister, the players will head to Mumbai for an open bus victory parade, culminating in a felicitation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium.
India’s cricketing triumph has brought immense joy to fans nationwide, marking a significant achievement in the sport’s history. The team’s resilience and dedication have truly paid off, and their celebrations are a testament to their hard-earned success.
