The World Wide Web, commonly known as ‘the Web’, was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 during his tenure at CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research). In March 1989, Berners-Lee proposed a “distributed information system” to facilitate information sharing and updating among scientists at CERN. Together with his colleague Robert Cailliau, he developed the first web browser, WorldWideWeb (later renamed Nexus), and the first web server, “httpd,” in 1990.
The world’s first website went live on 6th August 1991. This basic page explained the World Wide Web project and provided information on how to access and use it. Hosted on Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer, this site also served as the world’s first web server.
