Apple’s AI Features Might Not Launch with the iPhone 16: What We Know So Far

Apple has ventured into the realm of artificial intelligence with its new service, Apple Intelligence, unveiled at last week’s WWDC 2024 event.

Despite showcasing a range of AI features destined for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks, these advancements were noticeably absent from the first developer beta released shortly after the announcement.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the majority of Apple Intelligence features won’t be available to users until later this summer. Furthermore, when the service eventually launches with the stable build of iOS 18 in September, it will only be in a preview phase, indicating it isn’t fully ready for regular use.

Initially, Apple Intelligence will be limited to a subset of users in American English, and some features might require joining a waitlist.

Typically, Apple releases its latest iOS version shortly after the new iPhone series launches in mid-September. Since these devices need to be manufactured and equipped with the latest OS weeks ahead of the launch, the new features must be finalized by mid-August.

Given that many of the new AI features won’t be ready in time, Apple is likely to introduce them gradually over several months.

This staggered rollout approach allows Apple additional time to enhance its cloud infrastructure, refine its AI models, and mitigate the risk of misinformation.

Siri 2.0 Won’t Arrive Until Next Year

Gurman also reported that most of the revamped Siri features showcased at WWDC 2024 won’t be available until next year. The version of Siri that will accompany iOS 18 and the iPhone 16 will include some new features, such as a revamped interface, type-to-Siri functionality, improved natural conversation skills, and a broader understanding of Apple products.

Additionally, the integration of Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT is not expected until next year. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly negotiating deals with Google and Anthropic to bring their chatbots to iPhones. Similar agreements might be reached with Baidu and Alibaba Group in China.

While Apple’s new AI features are highly anticipated, their gradual rollout means users will have to wait a bit longer to experience the full potential of Apple Intelligence. This approach ensures that Apple can deliver a polished and reliable service. Stay tuned for more updates as Apple continues to innovate and integrate AI into its ecosystem.
