Adani Group Rejects Allegations of Swiss Bank Account Involvement, Refutes Hindenburg Claims

The Adani Group, a major Indian business conglomerate, has firmly rejected recent claims regarding the freezing of funds in Swiss bank accounts. In a media statement released on 12 September, the group denied any involvement in Swiss court proceedings, asserting that no company accounts have been sequestered by any authority.

This controversy emerged following allegations made by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The allegations were based on a report from the Swiss media outlet Gotham City, which claimed that Swiss authorities had frozen more than $310 million in multiple Swiss bank accounts as part of an investigation involving the Adani Group.

Adani Group’s Response

In response to these allegations, the Adani Group issued a forceful statement. An Adani Group spokesperson declared, “We unequivocally reject and deny the baseless allegations presented. The Adani Group has no involvement in any Swiss court proceedings, nor have any of our company accounts been subject to sequestration by any authority. Furthermore, even in the alleged order, the Swiss court has neither mentioned our group companies, nor have we received any requests for clarification or information from any such authority or regulatory body.”

The group went on to emphasise the transparency of its overseas holding structure, affirming that it is fully disclosed and compliant with all relevant laws. The company characterised the allegations as “preposterous, irrational, and absurd,” suggesting that they were part of a coordinated campaign to harm the group’s reputation and market value.

“We reiterate that our overseas holding structure is transparent, fully disclosed, and compliant with all relevant laws. These allegations are clearly preposterous, irrational, and absurd. We have no hesitation in stating that this is yet another orchestrated and egregious attempt by the same cohorts acting in unison to inflict irreversible damage on our group’s reputation and market value,” the spokesperson continued.

Background of the Allegations

The allegations put forth by Hindenburg Research are the latest in a series of accusations that have targeted the Adani Group. Hindenburg, known for its investigations into high-profile companies, has previously questioned the financial practices of the conglomerate, alleging fraud and governance issues. The latest claims about Swiss bank accounts are part of an ongoing dispute between the two entities, with Hindenburg suggesting that the Indian conglomerate has engaged in questionable financial activities.

Swiss media outlet Gotham City reported that the Swiss authorities froze over $310 million in several bank accounts supposedly linked to the Adani Group. However, the Adani Group’s strong denial of any involvement or wrongdoing has raised questions about the authenticity of the report and the credibility of the sources cited by Hindenburg Research.

A Coordinated Effort Against Adani Group?

In its statement, the Adani Group expressed concern that the allegations may be part of a broader strategy to damage its market value. The group highlighted that these accusations were “yet another orchestrated and egregious attempt by the same cohorts acting in unison” to cause irreversible harm to its reputation.

While addressing these claims, the Adani Group underscored its commitment to transparency, stating that its overseas holding structure is not only transparent but also adheres to all legal and regulatory requirements. The group maintained that it has always complied with relevant laws, both in India and abroad.

The Adani Group has firmly positioned itself against what it views as unfounded accusations, reiterating its dedication to transparency and compliance with all legal requirements. It has called these allegations “baseless” and is resolute in maintaining its stance against attempts to harm its reputation.

As this situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the allegations and subsequent denials will impact the group’s market position and public perception.
