Pakistan Reports First Mpox Cases of 2024 in Returnees from UAE

Pakistan has reported its first cases of Mpox for 2024, with three patients testing positive for the virus. Health authorities have confirmed that all three individuals had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), raising concerns over the spread of the virus.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s health department revealed the detection of the virus in these patients, marking Pakistan’s latest encounter with Mpox. The viral infection, which is known to spread through close contact, has also recently been detected in Sweden, highlighting a broader geographical spread.

Global Health Concerns Amid Mpox Spread

Following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has once again declared Mpox a global public health emergency. This marks the second time in two years that the virus has triggered such a global alert. The Congo outbreak involved the endemic clade I strain, but a newer variant, clade Ib, has emerged. This variant has shown a higher transmission rate, particularly through close contact, including sexual transmission, which has led to its spread across neighbouring African countries such as Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, expressed significant concern regarding the situation, stating, “The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of Mpox in the eastern DRC, its spread to neighbouring countries that had not previously reported Mpox, and the potential for further transmission within Africa and beyond are deeply concerning.”

Sweden’s First Case and Rising Global Awareness

The situation is not confined to Africa alone. Sweden has recently reported its first Mpox case, linked to the more severe Clade I strain. Jakob Forssmed, Sweden’s Health and Social Affairs Minister, addressed the public, stating, “We have now also during the afternoon had confirmation that we have one case in Sweden of the more grave type of Mpox, the one called Clade I.” This development further underlines the virus’s capacity to spread across borders and the need for vigilant monitoring.

Understanding Mpox and Its Risks

Mpox, a viral infection that spreads through close physical contact, is generally mild. However, in rare cases, it can lead to severe health complications or even death. Symptoms typically include flu-like signs, such as fever and muscle aches, as well as characteristic pus-filled lesions on the skin. The recent outbreak has caused global concern, especially with the appearance of new variants that have the potential to spread more easily and widely.

Pakistan has previously encountered Mpox cases, but it remains unclear which variant has been detected in the most recent patients. The health authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation closely, especially given the global spread of the virus and its variants.

The detection of Mpox cases in Pakistan, especially among individuals returning from the UAE, underscores the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures. As the virus continues to spread globally, it is crucial for public health authorities to implement strict monitoring and preventive strategies to contain further transmission.

For those traveling or returning from affected regions, it is advisable to remain vigilant for symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary. The ongoing global spread of Mpox serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in combating infectious diseases.
