In the wake of the tragic death of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, Kolkata Police have intensified their investigation by summoning key individuals connected to the case. According to sources, four junior doctors who had shared a meal with the deceased have been called in for questioning once again. This development comes amidst widespread protests and public outrage throughout the country.

The police inquiry now includes not only the junior doctors but also a range of hospital staff. The Head of Department, Assistant Superintendent, both male and female nurses, Group-D staff, and security personnel were all summoned to the Kolkata police headquarters at Lalbazar, as reported by ANI.

In a related political response, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh has highlighted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s commitment to justice in this case. Ghosh stated that Banerjee is deeply distressed by the incident and has described her as the ‘mother of Bengal’. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, he noted that Banerjee has instructed the police to expedite their investigation and ensure that the case proceeds through a fast-track court. “Mamata Banerjee has given time to the police till Sunday. …If there is no conclusion, then the case will be handed over to the CBI,” Ghosh asserted.

Ghosh also launched a critique against the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, drawing parallels with other high-profile cases of violence and asserting that the current situation reflects a broader societal issue. He noted that the Chief Minister had vowed to transfer the case to the CBI if required.

Amid these developments, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued an ultimatum demanding immediate action. The IMA has called for a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and stricter measures to ensure the safety of medical professionals, especially women, within the healthcare system. In a letter addressed to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the IMA stressed the need for a ‘safe zone’, defined security measures, and a Central Law to act as a deterrent against violence.

“We hope you would consider our demands favorably in the light of the deteriorating ground situation,” the letter concluded, as reported by ANI.

As the investigation progresses and public pressure mounts, it remains to be seen how the authorities will address these demands and what further steps will be taken to ensure justice for the deceased doctor.

The tragic death of the RG Kar Medical College doctor has sparked significant unrest and demands for accountability. With key figures being questioned and national bodies calling for improved safety measures, the situation remains fluid. The outcome of this case will be crucial in setting a precedent for how such incidents are handled in the future.
