In a distressing development, a 38-year-old engineer from Mumbai took his own life by jumping off the Atal Setu bridge on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the third such incident within a week.
Incident Captured on CCTV
CCTV footage reveals the sequence of events, showing the engineer, identified as K. Shrinivas, driving his Tata Nexon to the Nhava Sheva end of the Atal Setu bridge. He parked his car near the railing around 12:30 PM and then tragically jumped to his death.
Financial Struggles Cited as Motive
Shrinivas, a resident of Dombivli, had been grappling with severe financial difficulties. According to his family, these ongoing financial woes pushed him to this desperate act. He had left his home at approximately 11:30 PM the previous night and had a phone conversation with his wife and four-year-old daughter just hours before the incident.
Previous Suicide Attempt
The family disclosed that this was not Shrinivas’s first suicide attempt. Earlier in 2023, while working in Kuwait, he had tried to end his life by ingesting floor cleaner. Following this, he returned to Mumbai in October last year and began his own business in Dombivli, as reported by Mumbai Live.
Search Operation Underway
A search operation is currently being conducted by Navi Mumbai Police, along with Atal Setu rescue teams, coastal police, and local fishermen. However, their efforts are being hampered by rough seas and rain.
Series of Suicides
This incident is part of a troubling trend. On March 17, a 43-year-old doctor jumped off the same bridge due to depression and anxiety. More recently, on July 21, a 65-year-old diamond merchant from South Mumbai ended his life by jumping into the Arabian Sea near Gateway of India. Another suicide occurred on July 17, when a Ghatkopar resident jumped off the Worli-Bandra sea link.
