In a horrifying incident in Vasai, Mumbai, a man savagely killed his girlfriend by hitting her 15 times on the head with an iron wrench. The tragic event took place around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the Chinchpada area of Vasai East. Eyewitness footage shows a large crowd witnessing the assault but failing to intervene as the victim, Aarti Yadav, 20, was attacked.

The attacker heard saying, “Kyun kiya aisa mere saath (why did you do this to me),” repeatedly struck Aarti’s head with the spanner. The police revealed that the crime was the result of a failed romantic relationship. Rohit Yadav, the accused, and Aarti were dating until she ended the relationship a few days before. Rohit suspected Aarti of seeing someone else, leading to his violent outburst.

The Waliv police have registered a murder case, apprehended Rohit, and are investigating further. According to the police, Rohit attempted to call Aarti’s mother using her phone to inform her of the murder, but the call did not go through.

Rohit had vacated his rented home in Santosh Bhavan, Nalasopara East, three days before the murder and had been living on the streets since then. The backpack he carried during the attack contained a t-shirt and track pants.

The police found that the last dialed number on Aarti’s phone was her mother’s. “Although the call did not go through, Yadav told us that he was calling Aarti’s mother to tell her that he had killed Aarti,” stated a Waliv police officer. Aarti’s parents mentioned that Rohit had been harassing her for eight days before the murder, accusing her of infidelity. They disapproved of their relationship and advised Aarti to end it.

On Saturday, Rohit became agitated after seeing a man drop Aarti home on a two-wheeler. He quarreled with her and allegedly broke her phone. Aarti reported this incident to the Achole police station, leading to a non-cognizable case against Rohit. “We could not arrest him as the charges were non-cognizable and bailable, but warned him to stop stalking, harassing, and talking to Aarti,” explained a police officer from Achole police station.

Three days later, as Aarti left for work, Rohit followed her and confronted her on a busy road in Chinchpada, Vasai East. After a quarrel, Rohit assaulted her with a spanner and later stabbed her with a small knife. He continued the attack even after she collapsed, lying motionless in a pool of blood. Rohit then sat by her body until the police arrived.

Despite the brutality of the attack, bystanders merely watched and recorded videos and photographs. CCTV footage showed one passerby attempting to intervene but retreating after Rohit attacked him. The police are currently searching for this witness, crucial to the investigation.

Rohit was arrested at the crime scene and has been charged under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court on Wednesday and remanded to police custody until June 24. Police officials noted that while this was a crime of passion, there have been multiple similar instances in the Vasai region involving women from vulnerable or underprivileged backgrounds being killed by their boyfriends or partners. Such incidents often involve minor girls left unattended while their parents are at work.

This tragic event highlights the urgent need for better protection and support for vulnerable women. Authorities must take swift action to prevent such heinous crimes and ensure justice for victims.
