Monsoon 2024: As sweltering heat waves grip various parts of the country, the anticipation for the monsoon season is palpable. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the southwest monsoon to arrive in Kerala on May 31. “The Southwest Monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 31st with a model error of ±4 days,” stated the IMD bulletin. Here’s a detailed forecast for the monsoon’s arrival in major cities:
Delhi
The national capital is currently enduring severe heatwave conditions, with a red alert in effect until May 28. On May 27, temperatures soared to 48.3 degrees Celsius in Delhi’s Mungeshpur area. Meteorologists anticipate the monsoon to hit Delhi around June 27, although no official statement has been issued regarding its arrival.
Mumbai
The Indian Express reports that monsoon rains will likely begin in Mumbai around June 10, according to an IMD official. The monsoon 2024 has already reached the Andaman Islands, and meteorologists expect it to arrive in Mumbai between June 10 and 11. Normally, Mumbai experiences the onset of monsoon on June 11, but last year Cyclone Biparjoy delayed it by two weeks.
Bengaluru
The IMD forecasts that Bengaluru will experience the monsoon by June 13 or 14, with rainfall in Karnataka likely starting in the first week of June. Meteorologist CS Patil at IMD Bengaluru reported that the monsoon has advanced over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and anticipates it to reach Kerala by June 1–2, and subsequently the Karnataka coast by June 6 or 7.
Kolkata
West Bengal is currently dealing with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. This cyclone caused significant damage, including uprooting trees and knocking down electric poles. According to a report by the Times of India, the monsoon in West Bengal is predicted to arrive between June 10 and 29. HR Biswas, Head of RMC Kolkata, stated, “While there is no direct correlation between the onset dates in Kerala and South Bengal, we generally expect the monsoon to reach Bengal about 10 days after hitting Kerala.”
